This week was the final week of the biology semester of Integrated Science. I have enjoyed teaching you all about ecology and human biology this semester. Monday starts a new semester. Mr. Weeks will be teaching you about astronomy and Earth Science the coming semester.
This week we performed our Rat Dissections. Our students did a brilliant job at dissecting the rats. We also dissected a pregnant rat for comparison. This culminating activity supported what we have learned this human biology unit.
Next week is the last week in the semester. We will have 2 more summative grades. If you have not taken the Microscope summative, that will be done on Tuesday. Thursday we will have our final summative exam. Please do the review sheet and use the resources on this page to aid your studying.
Remember that in the next 4 days I may additionally put up some help guides for the human biology unit. With trend grading these last summatives are very important.
If you have not turned in acceptable citations for the nervous system presentation, please do that by Tuesday at the latest.
Good luck and study hard!
Welcome back from Winter Break. After some much needed rest, we got back into human biology and the nervous system. We finished up the Nervous System presentations. We mapped out the final 2 weeks of the semester. Next week we will be working with microscopes and doing the rat dissection. Please read through the information I have provided below. Watch the video on making wet mount slides. The last week we will review for the final summative exam and will have our summative on Thursday 1/21/16. Focus on vocabulary and key concepts as you study for the summative exam. I will provide a review sheet to prepare students for the exam. The review sheet will be done outside of class time
Last grades of the semester
This week we had a re-test on the digestive system on Monday. On Tuesday we began to look into the nervous system. We had a combination of notes, PowerPoint, and video. On Thursday, we began work on our nervous system presentation project. Students selected a topic and will work in pairs to build a presentation using PRIMARY source material. Remember in science, this means scholarly and peer reviewed. We used Lili.org to get this information from a database of journals.
This week we started back with a quiz over the digestive system. Students took a 26 question multiple choice quiz using the digestive system table of information that they made in class and as homework. On Tuesday, we did a lab on diffusion, designed a lab on diffusion or osmosis, and applied these concepts to understand the workings of the human kidney. This assignment will be due at the end of class this Thursday December 3rd. On Monday of Next Week, we will be re-testing on the digestive system. Monday come to class with your digestive table complete and having had studied your table. I also recommend that you complete the digestive system worksheets I have attached in preparation for your test. You will have 30 min to complete the test, so be prepared with the information.
This week our focus was on finishing up the circulatory system models of the anatomical and physiological. Monday was our final workday on the project. Tuesday students presented their models and did a reflection. On Thursday, we worked on a guided reading covering the circulatory system. I also assigned a Project Reflection form where students may earn proficiency by revisiting their products and reflecting on their process and outcomes. THIS IS DUE MONDAY.
On Monday we looked at the art of reflection and discussed how IB has places high value on developing the skill. We worked through a reflection sheet related to the exam. We also worked on building an anatomical and physiological model of the circulatory system. This will be presented on Tuesday November 10th. Please review the PowerPoints below for details. Lab reports were also returned. This was a formative assessment. You will be assessed later on these skills in a summative. You may reassess the lab report formative. We are developing the process that will be used in the DP science classes.
This week we have been covering the respiratory system. The PowerPoint and notes pages are below. On Tuesday we began investigating the effect of exercise on ventilation rate (or heart rate). Students designed a lab and will produce a lab report as a formative assessment due Thursday. We are beginning to develop the lab writing skills that our students will need in the DP science classes.
We are covering the vocabulary of anatomy. This vocabulary is important to have so that we can learn to speak in the same language. However, anatomy is excessively vocabulary rich and we do not need all of this to be able to be successful in Human Biology. We are going to focus on Organ Systems and not on identifying all parts by their accepted names. The PowerPoint below covers the basic intro into anatomy vocabulary. Please review the slides. On Thursday we discussed the respiratory system. Notes pages were given and PowerPoint is for your review.
